2014 WORLD CUP TEAMS AND THEIR NICKNAMES.

South Korea

Nickname: The Reds, Red Devils, Taeguk Warriors, Asian Tigers
The team's famous red jersey gives South Korea its "Reds" and "Red Devils" nickname. The squad is also known as the "Asian Tigers" for the country's historical and cultural association with the animal. " Taeguk Warriors" is another nickname, as thetaeguk (the yin and yang symbol on the national flag) is the symbol of balance.

Algeria

Nickname: Les Fennecs (The Fennec Foxes)
The national squad is nicknamed after the county’s national animal, the fennec fox, which is native to Algeria and the Sahara desert.


Russia
Nickname: Sbornaya (The National Team)
Like many of the squads on this list, the Russian national team is nicknamed “The National Team.” 

 Belgium

Nickname: Rote Teufel (German), Rode Duivels (Dutch), Diables Rouges (French), "The Red Devils"
The Belgium team was nicknamed “The Red Devils” by journalist Pierre Walckiers in 1906 after the team’s 3-2 victory over the Netherlands—red being the team’s jersey color.

USA  

Nickname: The Yanks, The Stars and Stripes The United States is famously known as “The Stars and Stripes," and so is the national soccer team. “Yanks” is obviously a colloquial term for “Yankee.

GHANA

Nickname: Black Stars The nation’s flag bears one black star in the middle. Ghana's coat of arms bears a single black star, symbol for the lodestar of Ghanaians and the freedom of Africa. The term "Black Stars", referring to the national team, began in the 1960s when the nation went through a run of dominance in the African Cup of Nations.


Portugal

Nickname: A Seleção das Quinas (The Team of the Five Shields)
This nickname refers to the five shields that are a part of the Portuguese coat of arms as well as the Portuguese national team crest.


Germany

Nickname: Die Nationalmannschaft (The National Team), Die Mannschaft (The Team), Die Adler (The Eagles
In Deutschland, the team is known as "Die Nationalmannschaft." "Die Mannschaft" is also used, but that term is mostly used by the foreign media. Another name for the German squad is "Die Adler" for the eagle on the team's crest.
Iran

Nickname: Team Melli (The National Team)
Pretty straightforward, wouldn’t you say?


Nigeria

Nickname: The Super Eagles
Formerly known as the “Green Eagles” due to the predominate color of the nation’s flag and the animal on the country’s coat of arms, Nigeria changed their nickname to “Super Eagles” following their 1994 African Cup of Nations title.


Bosina & Herzegovina

Nickname: Zmajevi (Dragons)
Historically, the Bosnians have been known as the "Zlatni Ljiljani" (Golden Lilies), the flower native to the land. To give the country’s sports teams a tougher image, Bosinia & Herzegovina call their squad the Dragons.


 ARGENTINA

Nickname: La Albiceleste (The White and Sky Blues) "La Albiceleste" is homage to Argentina’s flag colors of white and sky blue—the same colors Argentina uses for their traditional home kits.

Simple: Honduras starts with an “H" and it has a large "H" on their jerseys. Honduras is also known as "Los Catrachos" as well as “La Bicolor” (The Bi-color) in reference to the country’s flag colors of blue and white.

FranceNickname: Les Bleus (The Blues)
The French’s traditional blue kits give the national squad their nickname. 
 
 Ecuador


Nickname: La Tricolor (The Tri-color)
Like Mexico, Ecuador’s nickname is derived from the nation’s flag colors—in this case—yellow, blue and red. Ecuador uses the feminine definite article of “La” for their nickname compared to Mexico’s “El Tricolor.”
 




 Switzlerland

Nickname:
Rossocrociati ("Red Crosses" in Italian)
Traditonally, the Swiss team is known as "The National Team," however, you can say this in three languages: "Schweizer Nati," La Nati" or Squadra Nazionale," as German, French, and Italian are three of the four official languages of the country. Another nickname for the Swiss is “Rossocrociati,” meaning the plural form for "Red Cross." 
 
 Italy

Nickname: Gil Azzurri (The Blues)

Italy’s blue kits pay homage to the House of Savoy, one of the oldest royal families in the world, who unified Italy in 1861. Blue was the House of Savoy’s official color, thus the national team and all of Italy’s sports teams and athletes wear blue out of respect and tradition.

 England

Nickname: The Three Lions
The FA’s crest consists of three lions, which is attributed to the Royal Arms of England, which dates back to, you guessed it, Richard the Lionheart.
 
 

Costa RicaNickname: Los Ticos
The term “tico(s)” is a colloquial term for “costarricense(s)," the Spanish term for natives of Costa Rica. 
 

Uruguay

Nickname: La Celeste (The Sky Blue)

Also known as “Los Charruas,” Uruguay’s nickname of “La Celeste” comes from the now-defunct River Plate FC how wore a sky blue kit when they defeated Argentina squad Alumni in 1910. The win was so historic—having seen a Uruguayan team beat Alumni for the first time—that the Uruguayan football association approved to keep the sky blue/celeste kit as Uruguay’s nation team kit color.
 
 
 
Japan 

Nickname: Samurai Blue
The Asian county’s nickname comes from the color of their kits, blue, and the historical warriors of the land. 
 
 Ivory Coast 

Nickname: Les Éléphants (The Elephants)
The African nation’s history with the ivory trade gives the county’s soccer team its nickname.
 

Greece

Nickname: Ethniki (The National), Galanolefki (The Sky Blue Whites), Os Navegadores (The Navigators), Piratiko (Pirate Ship)

Traditionally, the Greek national team is known as the “Ethniki,” the National, the “Galanolefki” (Sky Blue Whites, a play on the country’s flag colors), and “Os Navegadores” (The Navigators) due the Greek’s history in sea exploration. During Euro 2004 in Portugal, the opening ceremony showcased a pirate ship, which represented Portuguese expeditions. A Greek sportscaster stated that it was up to the Greek squad to “steal” the opening game against the hosts, a feat the Greeks accomplished. Greece went on to win Euro 2004, and the name “Piratiko” gained fame.
 
 
 Colombia 
Nickname: Los Cafeteros (The Coffee Growers)
Coffee is historically one of Colombia’s biggest exports, thus we get “The Coffee Growers.”
 

Australia

Nickname: The Socceroos
Sydney journalist Tony Horstead coined the nickname in 1967, but it didn’t catch on to prominence until 1972 when the then-Australian Soccer Federation unveiled their national team crest, a homage to the Australian coat of arms, which features a kangaroo. Australia is one of few nations that calls the sport "soccer." Combine the most iconic marsupial of the land with soccer, and you have the portmanteau word “Socceroo.” 
 
 
 Chile

Nickname: La Roja (The Red One)
The original “roja,” Chile’s nickname is a homage to the color of their traditional home kit. Red is one of the three colors of the Chilean flag.



Netherlands

Nickname: Oranje
Orange is the national color of the Netherlands. This originates from the Dutch founding father William of Orange, who led the Dutch revolt against the Spanish in the Eighty Years’ War.


Spain

Nickname: La Furia Roja (The Red Fury)
The defending champions earned their “Furia” nickname during the 1920 Summer Olympic games in Antwerp. During the Luis Aragonés era as manager of Spain in the mid-2000s, Aragonés insisted that Spaniards call their team “La Furia Roja” to show national pride and display via their nickname the hunger and fury the national team had to win titles. Aragonés lead Spain to a European championship at Euro 2008, beginning a run of international dominance that his sucessor, Vicente Del Bosque, continued at the 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012.


Mexico

Nickname: El Tri (short for "El Tricolor")
The nation’s flag colors of green, white and red is where Mexico gets their famous “El Tri/El Tricolor” nickname.

Les Lions Indomptables (The Indomitable Lions)
Cameroon’s nickname is homage to the Bénoué-Gumti area in North Cameroon-North Nigeria lion conservation project.


Croatia 

Nickname: Vatreni (The Blazers)
The fiery ones.


Brazil

Nickname: Verde-Amarela (Green-Yellows), Canarinho (Little Canary)
The host nation’s nicknames of “Verder-Amarela” and "Cararinho" are a play on Brazil’s kits, which are a reflection of the nation’s flag. Other nicknames include “A Seleção” (The Selection, mainly used in Brazil) and the “Pentacampeões” (The Five Time Champions).
