Jubilee holds crisis meeting as Keter gets signatures for Waiguru removal

Jubilee MPs were holed up in crisis talks on the impending impeachment motion against Devolution CS Anne Waiguru on Tuesday evening.

The meeting was convened in Upper Hill, Nairobi county, after it emerged that the motion had gained considerable momentum across the political divide.

The meeting by TNA and URP members of parliament was based on fears that leaders who have signed it are determined to vote for Waiguru's impeachment.

But there are claims the MPs are being coerced to withdraw their support for the censure motion.

“I was called by a senior Jubilee politician and asked if I was determined to see Waiguru go,” said a URP MP, who refused to withdraw his signature.

There were reports some MPs declined to attend the meeting despite speculation that rewards await those who did, or have withdrawn their support.

“This is not a party position. Keter is just a renegade and we know him. He is the one who knows those who sent him,” another MP, who has not signed the petition. told the Star in confidence.

Nandi Hills MP Alfred Keter, who moved the motion, says more than 90 MPs have signed his petition, which is the second attempt in a year to remove Waiguru from office.

“I have forwarded the motion to the Speaker for approval and I can tell you there is no turning back on this one. She must go home,” Keter told the Star when reached for comment last evening.

National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi said; “If the motion comes to my office I will approve it under the normal process if it meets the required threshold."

Sources in Parliament told the Star majority of Cord MPs are among those who have signed the motion.

It requires 87 signatures to be approved by the Speaker and 117 MPs to sail through during voting.
